Garden Arrivals

I love finding tiny vegetables in my garden! (Yes I know the tomato is a fruit, but technically so is the pepper.) This will eventually be an orange bell pepper. Right now it's the size of a nickel.

This baby beefmaster tomato is the size of a quarter.

[osquer42]

I stepped into the lift and pressed the button for the top floor. Dragging my burden down the hallway, I reached the little stair. I dragged the heavy sack up the stairs and out onto the roof. The planters were already lined up and ready, packets of seeds waiting. Now that I had the dirt, this was going to be a magnificent rooftop garden!

June 18, 2006 01:22 PM (16:22 EST)

I repotted my monster aloe plant today.

I also transferred this group to a larger planter.

Mom picked up this delightful little container garden. It came with one roma tomato plant as well as parsley, sage, rosemary (alas no thyme) :-( dill, basil, and oregano. I think it would be great for someone with limited space to garden. It could live quite well on a deck or in a really sunny apartment. It came with a tiny tomato cage which I replaced with a larger one.

And look! Of all the tomato plants in my care, this one has the first tomatoes! Way to go, little roma!

Magnetic Poetry . . . Eternity Sleeps

I just ordered several new Magnetic Poetry sets. I had thought of combining the Poet edition with the Original to create a sort of Super-Mag-Poet set, but part of what makes it interresting is the limitation. It forces me to find diferent ways of expressing my thoughts, alternative wording. I still may add the Gardener kit to the Poet's edition!

We have a winner!

Friday's Feast

Feast Ninety-Eight

Appetizer: What is a word that you use that would not be considered common? I use a lot of uncommon words all of the time, but I have a list of words that are fun to say. It includes knickerbocker, credenza, kartoffelpuffer (a German potato pancake) and Antonio Banderas.

Soup: What theme of calendar do you have on your wall this year? *Sigh.* I haven’t gotten a theme calendar for home this year, but here at work I have a standard county issue on the wall. The county, for whom I work, prints their own.

Salad: Name 3 people you speak with by telephone a regular basis. Mom, Dad and Linda Harding (aka L.H.)

Main Course: If you could buy a new outfit for someone you know - who would it be and what would you purchase for them? I would buy my friend David an Inverness cloak.

Dessert: What is the last beverage you drank? Diet Pepsi

This is my first Friday Feast. Paperback Writer introduced me to them. I learn a lot of new things from her!

No one has more vivid ink than you use.

You rustle the branches that shelter me

Though you style yourself jester, I can see

this knight is made of much stronger metal.

Though distance and circumstances part us

the connection between us grows stronger.

Though society crumbles around us

and I trust reality no longer…

tonight I shall sleep, a smile on my face,

wrapped in the comfort of our dream’s embrace.

Recent Obsession - dedicated to my father without whose help this would not have been possible!

Well, here it is, the project that has occupied my thoughts since winter. My herb garden. It is in the design of a compass rose. The direction lines are marked (going clockwise) by parsley (East), sage (South), rosemary (West) and thyme (North). I always plant those four herbs in that order because I love the song Scarborough Fair.

There are three kinds of basil: sweet, purple ruffled and queen of Siam. Then there's dill, oregano, tarragon, germander, celantro, sweet marjoram, chamomile, and chives. The onions and garlic can't be seen yet. I have some St. John's Wort that I just started from seed in the greenhouse (Mom gave me the cutest portable greenhouse approx. 4'x3'x2' - surprisingly useful.) and it will go in front of the chamomile when its big enough. There are four kinds of lavender next to the rocks. (There is a shorter rock behind the one in the foreground.) They are English, French, Spanish and Goodwin Gray Creek.

The flowers are marigolds and violas. I'd like twice as many violas for the boarder, but I can't find any right now. I spaced them evenly so if I find more I can add them. They should expand to a respectable boarder in any case. The dragon is named Nelson (After
Lord Admiral Nelson) and he will go on the lower rock. That will free up the taller rock for the sundial that I am going to add as soon as I find the right one.

I haven't decided what to mark the direction lines with. I left space at the end of each row for a post or a rock or something. I wonder if I could get four garden gnomes wearing shirts marked N, S, E, W. Nah, probably not.

I haven't got a leg to stand on. That's not true. I know I've got legs because my hamstrings are wound tighter than an obsessive compulsive at a family reunion. I've been gardening between the raindrops, and you don't realize how far away the groud is until you've been bent over sticking things in the mud all day.

Allow me to present Buckingham...

...so named because he frequently takes up position, standing on the wire near the hummingbird feeder, like the Palace Guard. He is a ruby-throated hummingbird and my hummingbird feeders are in his territory. I have seen Buckingham chase other hummingbirds away, even females. Sometimes a female manages to sneak in and get a sip. I've planted snapdragons, morning glories, and lobelia for the little darlings. Sometimes I'll hear their faint squeaks right before one zips past my ear! Or is that the garden gnomes laughing?

June 3, 2006 12:22 PM (15:22 EST)

Speaking of Star Wars...

Paperback Writer did a recent post about crushes. I keep meaning to respond to that one. I won't go into my recent crushes now, but my first three were (and still are) quite interesting.

My first crush was Darth Vader. Star Wars was the first film I saw in a theater and I was at a very impressionable age. I came to realize later that I wanted to be Princess Leah. (Oh that Han Solo, but Harrison Ford was a later crush. Don't get me started on Indiana Jones!) I guess I have a thing for villains, too. I always imagined Darth with a handsome but scarred face. That was before Luke pulled off the helmet in Return of the Jedi and showed us that it was really Uncle Fester underneath. What a let down!

My second crush was Dracula. My fascination with vampires is for another post. I'll share some poetry.

As I got a little older, I turned away from the dark side a bit. I discovered Sherlock Holmes! I read every story and novel straight through. I re-read one of the stories recently and rediscovered my love for Doyle's use of language. There's something about a man who plays the violin and smokes a pipe. Plus he's eccentric!

Looking back now I can't help but wonder if I didn't just have a thing for men in cloaks.

Say, "Hello," Pendragon!

This is Pendragon, aka Little Evil, aka Scruffy Chicken. Yes. I know he looks like a feather duster, but he's actually a Senegal Parrot. I've managed to cure him of his feather plucking, but he may never attain his former glory. I love him anyway. He refuses to talk although I'm sure he could if he wanted to. I've heard him say "hello" and "step up" when he thinks I'm asleep or if I'm in another room and he wants me to come back, but he won't do it on request. The closest I can get is "low." He does sound effects, though. His favorite is the garbage truck backing up (beep beep beep beep). He does a cough, a sneeze and a zipper being pulled. It took me quite a while to figure out that one. I thought he was kissing. Then one day I zipped a bag shut and heard it echo in his corner. He also does the back door alarm from a house that we no longer live in. He used to imitate an Indian ring-necked parakeet named "Miss Oliver," but I haven't heard that one in a long time. He's just about got the first four notes of Beethoven's 5th down. Sometimes he forgets the first one. And then there's his R2-D2 impression.

Oh, and I forgot to say that he also laughs. He can tell when people are talking about something funny (must be the tone of voice) and often laughs at just the right moment.

These are the offspring of violas and pansies that lived in pots on the railing above the eggplants. The hybrid seeds must have blown into this pot and these delightful little flowers are the result. I call them "The Voluntary Violas!"

Sparky's name inspired me to some alliteration! I still love sparklers. As a girl, I could never write my name in the snow, but I could write it on the July air and laugh to feel the faint prick of sparks as they scattered. I know this Independance Day I will write my own name and Sparky's on the sky and delight in knowing that some things still feel the same no matter how grown up I get!

In The Royal Box - a 55 Fiction Fantasy
