"What's the matter?" he asked, his concern apparent on his face.
What resolve she had managed to hold onto dissolved and ran down her cheeks in tears that burned like the unrequited love in her heart. She would let him go without telling him the truth of why she was crying.
And yet, when he looked into her eyes like that, how could she resist?
"I love you." The words were out before she could stop herself. Hearing herself say it didn't shock her nearly as much as him saying it at exactly the same moment.
His kiss was a surprise almost as sweet.
