"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?… There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do…as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." ~M.Williamson

An empath's lot is not a simple one.
Gathering others' feelings takes its toll.
Binding their wounds, my own become undone.
But this is my calling. I know my role.
I am the angel in shadows dark,
The familiar who carries their magic.
For the blown out candle I am the spark.
My story is triumphant, not tragic.

His embrace was the last thing I expected even though many an evening star had heard me wishing for it. I froze and gasped though I did not stiffen. Just as he was about to pull back and apologize, I managed to melt and, clinging to him for the support he longed to give, I kissed him back.

I lifted my face and stood on my toes to kiss him. He was tall. His arms were strong, his hands huge, and I felt totally engulfed in his embrace...
...and I liked it.

He was drunk but she was kind.
What had possessed him? He had no head for wine.
She was such a little thing, so it couldn't have been easy, but she steered him to the bed and got him horizontal. She slipped off his boots and tucked the covers around his shoulders.
"Do I get a goodnight kiss?" He muttered. His last sensation before the darkness took him was of her warm lips on his forehead. "'s not quite what I had in mind...zzzzzzz..."

The kiss of a whisker makes me shiver
Spirits entice but rarely deliver
The wind rattles leaves and rattles my bones
Whirls all in a dance to the tune it moans
The moon peek-a-boos with clouds for a screen
Lighting the shadow shades of Halloween

She started to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
"Wait," he begged. He snapped a picture and showed it to her.
When she saw the pink tear tracks through the soot on her face she couldn't help but laugh.
"That's better," he said, wiping her lips clean with his handkerchief so he could kiss them, "I don't like to see you cry, but if you do cry I want to be there to see it."

"What do we do now?" I asked.
"What do you mean we?" My grandad's ghost shrugged, "Your mine now."

He ascended a flight of stairs. Suddenly his vision was blocked by a pair of small, cold hands.
Again the laughter, "You're mine now."

Then he realized it was just

Ask her to dance? Yes. He could do that.
Smile and laugh and pretend it was all in fun? Yes. He could do that.
Pretend he didn't notice when she glanced at his lips and blushed? No. That he couldn't do.

"I know it's a cliche, but..." He extended a bouquet of red rosebuds.
"Nothing wrong with a good cliche," she replied, bending her head to take in their scent.
"You're right," he murmured as he drew her to him."I wonder how many cliches we can come up with between us."
Her lips were softer than the rose petals but not as soft as her sighs.

ESCAPISM
I lie beside you listening to the rain and your breath
trying not to dwell in contemplation of loss and death.
Surrounded by all of the gifts that you have given me,
I know it's only my mind that keeps me from being free.
Though the shackles of my past should be more easily shed,
I doubt if even Houdini could escape from my head.
So, now I must realize that my saving grace is this:
my heart has faith that you will pass me the key with a kiss.

Her kiss, as soft as a petal, was enough to snap his heart,
the innocence of her love more seductive than any art.
The touch of her hands, cold and trembling, could set his soul on fire.
Her guileless eyes were the perfect trap to capture his desire.

I kissed his neck
the scent of his skin
awakening my desire
he hummed
with pleasure
but didn't realize
that my attentions
had intentions
and so
while he continued
with his book
I made the tea
at least I could
bring the kettle
to the boil

We were so young.
Spandau Ballet played
and our bodies swayed.
His kiss was clumsy
but not unwelcome.
I didn't know
until later
that it was his first.
I wish I had.
Instead of just
kissing him back,
I'd have knocked
his socks off.

What he'd dreamt was her kiss on his forehead
Was a memory long since sinned
What he'd imagined her suffering sigh
Was merely the breath of the wind
For he had left her like the dark at dawn
Though he'd been her star for a night
He turned and breaking out of her orbit
He ever regretted his flight
